Staff Accountant

Job Description:

Seeking a reliable, thorough, dependable, ethical person with a good-natured, cooperative attitude, who is able to work well individually and within a team environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Accounts receivable: preparing daily cash receipts and deposits, monthly invoices and account statements.
  • Accounts payable: coding invoices, cutting and voiding checks, processing ACH payments.
  • Reconciling balance sheet accounts.
  • Preparing monthly revenue reports.
  • Collection calls on past due advertiser accounts.
  • Sales & use tax calculation and monthly filing.
  • Assisting with month and year-end closing.
  • Assisting with budgeting and forecasting.
  • Verifying accuracy of accounting documents by tracing transactions, creating reports and spreadsheets to classify, record and summarize data.
  • Routine filing.
  • Special accounting projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Business or Accounting degree.
  • 2 years of related accounting experience preferred.
  • Excel proficiency a must.
  • Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent, professional phone manner required to assist customers regarding billing questions and discrepancies.
  • Will train on specialized accounting software used in publishing industry.

Integrated Account Executive

Washingtonian magazine is looking for a full time salesperson to join its team. Responsibilities include selling our print publications, digital products and event sponsorships. Candidate must have proven sales experience, excellent communication skills, and be a self-starter. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and able to thrive in a high volume, fast-paced and team-oriented environment. Knowledge of the local DC, Maryland, & Virginia market a plus. Responsibilities:

  • Meet and exceed sales goals monthly sales goals.
  • Create and sell integrated media programs utilizing all platforms.
  • Cold call & prospect for new customers-sales development of territory is critical.
  • Identify the key advertising placement decision makers and initiate and pursue productive, consultative relationships.
  • Build upon and service existing advertisers in your assigned territory.
  • Develop and prepare sales proposals and custom marketing presentations for advertising clients.
  • Attend networking, community, and client events providing a strong representation of the Washingtonian brand.
  • Respond proactively to client requests for proposals, advertising information and materials.
  • Analyze competitive set and develop formal “account plans” for top 25 prospects in territory.

Skills:

  • 3-5 years of print, digital, event sponsorship, and social media sales experience.
  • Ability to work with and effectively communicate to a full range of clients – from small, local businesses to corporate accounts and advertising agencies.

Editorial

Editorial Fellowship

Washingtonian’s editorial fellowship offers applicants the chance to immerse themselves in all aspects of making a magazine. As a regional magazine for the national capital, we cover a universe that includes national newsmakers and hometown tastemakers, everything from power politics to local real estate to the ways our diverse city shops, eats, and dresses. Our editorial fellows fact-check stories, work occasional magazine events, and write as often as possible for our magazine and our website. The ideal applicant is a self-starter, ready to collaborate with our creative newsroom and get fired up about covering the day’s happenings in Washington—but also someone with enough curiosity to sniff out interesting news, trends, and personalities that aren’t already in the media. Over the years, our editorial fellows have written feature stories, landed magazine jobs, and had tons of fun. Join us!

Responsibilities: 

  • Pitch and write articles for the print magazine and website
  • Research and fact-check print stories
  • Assist with Washingtonian public programming
  • Attend daily and weekly staff meetings

Qualifications: 

  • Available to work full time Monday through Friday

Production

Production Manager

Washingtonian is seeking a full-time Production Manager with experience in designing ads, managing projects in a deadline driven environment, and helping to shape the advertising sections of an award-winning city magazine. Web Fellowship

Do you want to produce visually compelling online stories and content to help Washingtonians stay in the know about the newest restaurants, things to do, and cultural news? Are you eager to learn the ins and outs of web production, social media management, and content creation?

Apply to Washingtonian’s web + social media fellowship! 

The web & social media fellow is a self-starter with an appreciation for digital audiences and how they prefer to consume content. They understand that the perfect tweet is not the ideal Instagram caption and can adapt stories for different platforms. They are excited to find new and creative ways to promote and expand our journalism online. Over the years, our web + social fellows have written stories for print and web, landed jobs at prestigious media companies, and had tons of fun.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist web producer in producing stories from print for the website, including features
  • Assist web producer in daily email content curation for newsletters
  • Pitch and produce content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok  
  • Assist social media producer in finding and repurposing archival stories 
  • Assist the digital team in the planning and execution of special project assignments

The fellow will also have the opportunity to learn social media analytics, write for our website and print, and meet with Washingtonian staff to learn about their career trajectory.

Qualifications:

  • Available to work full time Monday through Friday
  • Have CMS experience (WordPress is a plus)
  • Have Photoshop experience
  • Experience creating social content on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. TikTok experience is a plus.
  • Sharp social copywriting skills and strong command of tone
  • Ability to multitask and juggle priorities on deadline
  • Prior HTML experience is a plus
  • Basic video/photo/visual editing skills are a plus
  • SEO experience is a plus
